An unidentified submarine was detected in Japan’s contiguous zone southeast of Tsushima Island, the Defense Ministry announced on Feb. 16. It was the first time for the ministry to detect a submarine in waters close to Tsushima. The government is now conducting analysis to determine its nationality and the purpose of its passage through waters near the island.
A P-3C patrol aircraft of the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) detected the submarine, which was traveling southwest, on the morning of Feb. 15. The ministry said that the submarine apparently sailed toward the East China Sea. The submarine did not intrude into Japanese territorial waters. (Slightly abridged)
