Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific command, gave an interview on Feb. 17 at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. He gave the following comments on reports that China had deployed ground-to-air missiles on the Paracel (Xisha) Islands: “This is a clear indication of militarization. While we are not surprised, this will certainly be a major concern.”

He also pointed out that “China has continued its activities despite its statements on not militarizing (the South China Sea),” criticizing China’s high-handed maritime advances.

Harris also said that the U.S. “will continue” its patrol operations for “freedom of navigation,” which U.S. vessels undertook last October and in January.
