Defense Minister Gen Nakatani met yesterday with Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command. Referring in their talks to China’s deployment of surface-to-air missiles in the Paracel Islands, Nakatani told Harris: “Japan cannot overlook China’s moves to unilaterally change the status quo.” Harris pointed out that “this is evidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping has not fulfilled his commitment.”

Nakatani told Harris that Japan supports the U.S.’s “freedom of navigation operation.” He also indicated that Japan will cooperate with the U.S. through such measures as joint patrol exercises by the Maritime Self-Defense and the U.S. Navy.
