Ichiro Matsui, who heads the political party Initiatives from Osaka, indicated a negative view on the possibility of former Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto running in the House of Councillors election this summer even if simultaneous elections for the two Diet chambers are held. Matsui made this statement to reporters at the Osaka prefectural government office on Feb. 17.

Pointing out that Hashimoto will appear regularly on a television program from April, Matsui said: “He has a contract with a TV station. He will not return to the political world for a while.” When asked whether Hashimoto will run in an election for the House of Representatives, he said, “Not a chance. He will distance himself from the political world for a while.”

At a press conference on Feb. 17, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who has praised Hashimoto’s abilities, said: “I believe what Mr. Matsui said is true.”
