The Nuclear Regulation Authority on Feb. 18 completed key inspections of Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Takahama No. 1 and No. 2 reactors based on new safety standards.
The reactors went online more than 40 years ago. They are the first 40-plus-year reactors that have been certified to meet the new safety standards.
The NRA will soon submit a document that acknowledges Takahama’s basic safety policies comply with the new standards. But to restart the reactors, by July the power utility needs to gain approval of the basic safety policies, detailed equipment designs, and extension of operations. (Abridged)
