At a regular prefectural assembly session on Feb. 23, Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga expressed his plan to call on the government to resume consultations between cabinet ministers and the heads of local municipalities on the issue of reducing the burden imposed by the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station (Ginowan City) on Okinawa. The consultations have been suspended for over a year. He reiterated his intention to ask the government to suspend the operation of the Futenma base by February 2019.
