The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) “special committee on sexual orientation and identity issues” aiming at eliminating discrimination against individuals suffering from gender identity disorder, homosexuals, and other sexual minorities (LGBT) held its first meeting at the party headquarters on Feb. 23. The committee will strive to draw up concrete policies by mid-May.

This is meant to broaden support among voters with an interest in LGBT issues in the House of Councillors election this summer. Committee chairman Keiji Furuya remarked that “conservatism stands for fully recognizing social diversity.”
