Referring at a press conference on Feb. 25 to the U.S.’s intention to step up its “freedom of navigation” operations by military vessels and aircraft in the South China Sea, where China has been asserting its territorial claims and establishing a military stronghold. Chief Cabinet Secretary expressed support for the U.S. move, saying, “We welcome it. It is important for the international community to enhance coordination to protect open, free, and peaceful seas.” In connection with the possibility of Japan participating in the operations and concrete support measures, he only said: “Japan will firmly cooperate and respond.”
