52% “disapprove” of government’s handling of Fukushima reconstruction: Nikkei poll

 Japan will mark the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 this year. [The Nikkei Inc./TV Tokyo public opinion poll conducted on Feb. 26–28] asked respondents whether they approve of the government’s reconstruction initiatives. In response, 31% of pollees said that they “approve” while 52% said they “disapprove.” Among those who support the cabinet, 46% said they “approve,” exceeding the 40% who “disapprove.” Among cabinet non-supporters, 16% “approve” of the government’s initiatives while 71% “disapprove.”

 

 Regarding nuclear power, 26% indicated that “Japan should move forward with restarting its nuclear power plants,” a 3-point drop from the survey conducted in mid-October 2015. Those saying “Japan should not move forward with restarting its nuclear plants” increased by 4 points to 60%. A total of 42% of cabinet supporters thought that “Japan should move forward with restarting plants,” while 46% said “Japan should not.” Among cabinet non-supporters, 12% indicated “Japan should move forward with restarting plants,” while 79% said “Japan should not.”
