NHK reported on its website on a meeting between LDP Secretary General Tanigaki and visiting Chinese special representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei, during which the two officials agreed on the need to continue to closely monitor the situation in North Korea given that it may carry out further provocations. Tanigaki reportedly said: “North Korea’s abductions, nuclear tests, and ballistic missile launches are serious issues and we hope to make efforts toward resolving those with the help and wisdom of China.” The Chinese official reportedly responded by saying: “We support the resolution adopted at the UNSC, including the sanctions. However, sanctions alone will not lead to resolving the issues and we would like to cooperate with Japan.” He also reportedly pointed out that North Korea’s development of technology for missiles and nuclear weapons has probably advanced substantially.
