Mainichi reporter calls for presidential trip to Hiroshima

In his regular column on Friday, Mainichi’s special senior writer Fuse urged President Obama to visit Hiroshima when he travels to Japan for the G7 summit in May so that the U.S. leader can reverse what the journalist called a “dangerous global trend” on the nuclear proliferation front. The writer took up North Korea’s relentless nuclear development, Russian President Putin’s reference to the use of nuclear weapons in his public statements last year, China’s strong reaction to a Japanese proposal asking world leaders to visit Hiroshima and/or Nagasaki, and Donald Trump’s recent remark on Japan and South Korea going nuclear, noting that these episodes point to global nuclear disarmament programs losing momentum. The former Washington correspondent insisted that a “world free of nuclear weapons” cannot be realized unless the President visits Hiroshima.
