Secretary Kerry Chose to Visit Atomic Bomb Dome

(Masaki Ishikawa, Yuko Murase, Takuya Inoue)

Upon completion of the ceremony of laying wreaths at the cenotaph for victims of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, foreign ministers of the G7 countries visited the Atomic Bomb Dome.

U.S. Secretary of State Kerry later visited Hiroshima Castle, which stands some 1.5km from Peace Memorial Park. Since both visits were unscheduled, Hiroshima Prefectural Police scrambled to provide security for the new situations.

When the foreign ministers left the cenotaph and made a U-turn heading towards the nearby Atomic Bomb Dome, forty to fifty policemen who were stationed around the cenotaph dashed to the Dome and began to control the public’s access to it.

After lunch, Mr. Kerry said he would like to stroll around the city. He visited Hiroshima Castle before the press briefing in the evening. Mr. Claudio Gauzo (50) who was visiting from Switzerland and at the castle said excitedly: “I was very surprised to see Secretary Kerry suddenly appeared with policemen.”
