Noontime news shows continued to give extensive coverage to the Kumamoto earthquakes, including ongoing search and rescue operations for the eight missing people and the resumption of operations at Kumamoto Airport after five days. NHK said a 51-year-old woman died after suffering from deep-vein thrombosis while taking shelter in her car.

TV-Asahi reported that calls are mounting within the ruling coalition for Prime Minister Abe not to dissolve the Lower House for a “double election” in July, quoting an unnamed LDP lawmaker as saying: “If the premier chooses to hold a snap election, it would be only natural for Kumamoto residents and people elsewhere to urge the premier to spend the money for the nationwide election on rebuilding the devastated communities.”
