Asahi wrote this morning that Taiwanese President Ma said on Wednesday that Japan’s southernmost island of Okinotorishima is not an islet, as the GOJ claims, but a “rock” and hence an exclusive economic zone cannot be established around it. He made the remarks in response to a recent incident in which Taiwanese fishermen were arrested by Japanese authorities for “illicit” fishing in the vicinity. This comment by the outgoing leader was reportedly intended to hold in check the incoming administration led by the opposition leader Tsai, who is said to be pro-Japan.
