Yomiuri wrote that the GOJ filed a protest on Monday with the Taiwanese government over its deployment of two vessels, including a coast guard boat, in the vicinity of Okinotorishima in the Pacific. Foreign Minister Kishida, who is currently visiting Bangkok, told the press: “As the outcrop is recognized as an island under the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea, the designation of the EEZ around it is valid…. We cannot accept Taiwan’s unilateral and unique claim” that it is a rock.
