All papers reported that Defense Minister Nakatani spoke by phone with his Philippine counterpart Gazmin on Monday and informed him of Japan’s decision to lease five secondhand Beachcraft TC-90 planes to the Philippine military with the goal of assisting Manila with enhancing its naval operations to counter China’s maritime advancement in the South China Sea. Pointing out that President Aquino, who has been taking a hardline toward China, is expected to step down in June and that his successor may take a softer approach, Yomiuri wrote that the GOJ hastily made the decision on the aircraft lease so as to ensure that the next Philippine administration will continue to attach importance to enhancing defense collaboration with Tokyo to counter the Chinese.
