Japanese, South Korean lawmakers agree to promote exchanges

By Yujiro Okabe in Seoul

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) General Council Chairman Toshihiro Nikai met with Park Cho-un, a member of the People’s Party, in Seoul on May 2.  South Korea’s second-largest opposition party, the People’s Party made great strides in the April general election. The two politicians agreed to promote parliamentary exchanges between the two countries. Referring to the good relationship between former Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and President Kim Dae-jung, Park stressed the need for improving bilateral ties. In response, Nikai said, “We must expand relations beyond what they were in the Obuchi-Kim period.”
