NHK reported this morning that the head of Taiwan’s maritime coast guard hinted that a coast guard vessel it dispatched on May 1 to protect Taiwanese fishing boats from Japanese coast guard cutters in waters off Okinotorishima Island may enter Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The remarks were reportedly meant to emphasize Taiwan’s position not to recognize Japan’s EEZ around Okinotorishima and keep Japan in check.
