LGBT parade held in Tokyo

Most papers reported briefly in their city news section on Monday on the “Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2016” event held in Yoyogi Park onunnamed Sunday calling for greater public understanding for sexual minorities. According to the organizer, some 5,000 LGBT people and others took part in the parade. Ambassador Kennedy delivered remarks in which she said: “I want you to know that there are people who love you for who you are. Everyone has the right to marry whomever they love.” The Asahi website and Huffington Post Japan posted longer stories on the Ambassador’s participation.

shot0021testTBS aired a similar report this morning, quoting the Ambassador as saying: “I’m proud to be the first U.S. ambassador to speak here…. If one person is discriminated against because of what they look like, what god they believe in, or who they love, none of us are truly free.” The Ambassador expressed hope for further LGBT awareness activities by saying that diversity strengthens society. NHK reported on the event on Sunday evening. BuzzFeed also carried a similar story.
