Abe, Putin agree on cooperation in salmon, trout fishing

By Yohei Maeda in Sochi, Russia

In connection with the ban on drift-net fishing of salmon and trout in Russia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from last January, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Vladimir Putin agreed on May 6 to cooperate to secure fishing opportunities.

At the summit meeting, Abe asked for Putin’s cooperation in securing fishing opportunities for Japanese fishing boats. Putin said: “We are considering alternative fishing methods. We would like to cooperate in finding a solution.”
