Secretary Mabus, DM Nakatani confirm close cooperation

image001NHK reported this afternoon that visiting Secretary of the Navy Mabus and Defense Minister Nakatani met at the MOD this morning, during which they confirmed close bilateral cooperation over North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and China’s maritime advancement in the South China Sea. DM Nakatani reportedly said the deterrence and response capability of the U.S.-Japan alliance is extremely significant in light of the increasingly severe security situation surrounding Japan. In response, Secretary Mabus reportedly said: “We must demonstrate to the world that the U.S. and Japan will jointly respond to missile launches and firmly stand up against any moves to change the status quo in the South China Sea or East China Sea.” DM Nakatani also expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the U.S. military in the wake of the Kumamoto earthquakes.
