LDP lawmaker Maruyama’s “slave” remarks deleted from Upper House commission minutes

The House of Councillors Commission on the Constitution decided on May 11 to delete from its minutes two expressions, one including “slaves,” in the remarks made in February by Kazuya Maruyama, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He said: “In the United States, a black man has become president. Blacks were slaves.”

Although the Upper House commission deleted the expressions the day after the U.S. announced President Obama’s decision to visit Hiroshima, the Upper House Secretariat said, “The policy of deleting the expressions was previously decided; the deletion has nothing to do with the presidential visit to Hiroshima.”
