In preparation for the plan to deploy the Ground Self-Defense Force’s vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft V-22 Osprey to the Saga Airport (Saga City), the Defense Ministry conducted an on-site inspection including a land survey of the proposed site adjacent to Saga Airport on May 12. Based on the survey results, the ministry will present a facilities arrangement plan to the Saga Prefectural Government.

In order to determine whether to accept the plan, the prefectural government has requested the ministry provide details. The survey was conducted as part of meeting the request.

The ministry plans to build hangars and an administrative building on a 30-hectare site adjacent to the airport. Besides 17 Ospreys, about 50 helicopters from the GSDF Camp Metabaru (Yoshinogari, Saga Prefecture) will be deployed to the airport.

Local residents and the local fisherman’s cooperative strongly oppose the conversion of the airport to joint military and civilian use.
