Senior members of the ruling and opposition parties appeared live on the show and discussed the pros and cons of raising the consumption tax rate to 10% as planned next spring. While ruling party members expressed the view that the current economic conditions do not warrant delaying the tax hike, opposition party members expressed opposition to raising the tax rate next April. LDP policy chief Inada said: “Our policy to raise the tax rate to 10% in April 2017 remains unchanged unless there is an event comparable to the Lehman Shock or the Great East Japan Earthquake.” She added that since economic conditions can change, a decision will be made if the Japanese economy is judged to be at risk of being seriously undermined by the tax hike. Komeito policy chief Ishida echoed Inada’s views.
