U.S., Japan to hold multinational meeting on mercury policy in Minamata

Tuesday morning’s Kumamoto Nichi Nichi Shimbun wrote that on Monday the U.S. and Japan released a joint statement regarding an international conference on mercury policy to be held in Minamata in the latter half of this year with the goal of sharing technical expertise on mitigating mercury’s impact on the environment with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In this connection, EPA Administrator McCarthy will reportedly visit Minamata today and hold talks with Mayor Nishida. They plan to release a joint message calling for the early effectuation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
