The Abe administration will establish a cabinet-level council to boost the government’s efforts in nurturing and developing IT professionals so that Japan can take full advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and utilize big data in “the fourth industrial revolution.” The growth strategy (Japan Revitalization Strategy) draft plan, which includes the initiative, is waiting for approval at a cabinet meeting later this month.

To streamline the process, the administration will overhaul the current “vertically segmented administrative system” and adopt a new integrated cross-agency approach. The administration will launch a “public and private conference for the fourth industrial revolution” as the umbrella organization of the cabinet-level council. This conference, together with the “conference for AI strategy” and “conference for robotic revolution,” will oversee the council’s human resources development efforts, as well as coordinate effective research and development initiatives with business community representatives.
