CCS Suga comments on Trump

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga commented on real estate mogul Donald Trump, who is certain to win the Republican Party’s nomination in the U.S. presidential election, during an Internet program on the evening of May 20. He said, “In a sense, he is a person who is easy to deal with.” Suga had been careful to avoid commenting on U.S. presidential candidates in his previous news conferences.

Suga pointed out that Trump, who has been in the limelight for his radical statements, “is probably doing what he’s doing to win the election, fully aware that he will not be able to take such positions (when he becomes president). He will probably adopt a realistic policy line once he takes over the administration.” Reacting to Trump’s call for Japan to shoulder all the expenditures of U.S. Forces Japan, Suga argued, “The Japan-U.S. alliance is also very important for the U.S. It is important to work toward achieving a mature alliance relationship.”
