On June 2, Defense Minister Gen Nakatani rescinded the order to intercept ballistic missiles,

which had been issued in response to a possible North Korean missile launch. Following the rescindment, the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) began withdrawing the Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC3) system, a surface-to-air missile system, set up at the Defense Ministry in Ichigaya, Tokyo, and other places.

The ministry issued the interception order on May 30. The following day (May 31), North Korea launched without success what appeared to be a Musdan, a medium-range ballistic missile.
