Saturday evening’s Asahi reported on its front page that Defense Minister Nakatani delivered a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, during which he expressed “strong concern” over any attempt to unilaterally change the state quo or create a fait accompli since that would deviate substantially from the maritime order based on the principles of international law. The paper said although Nakatani did not mention China by name, he kept the nation in check by saying that major nations are required to exercise restraint in order to avert contingencies. Concerning the security legislation that came into effect in March, Nakatani called for understanding by saying it will enable Japan to “make further contributions to the peace and stability of the international community.” Saturday evening’s Nikkei also front-paged Nakatani’s speech, saying that he reiterated his support for the U.S. decision to send its vessels to the South China Sea.
