Anti-U.S. base relocation parties gain majority in Okinawa prefectural assembly

NHK and all commercial networks reported on Monday morning on the results of the prefectural assembly election in Okinawa on Sunday, in which candidates from parties supportive of Governor Onaga gained a majority in the assembly by winning 28 of the 48 seats.

All Monday papers also reported on the results of the election, speculating that the governor will likely step up his call for the Abe administration and the U.S. to review the ongoing FRF construction project. Asahi and Mainichi conjectured that Okinawa citizens’ negative feelings about the U.S. bases triggered by the recent incident involving a former Marine helped increase support for anti-base candidates.
