Vice Defense Minister Toru Mimura met with Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Joint Staff on June 4. They discussed South China Sea issues and the start of the operation of the “maritime and air liaison mechanism” for preventing accidental conflicts between their air and naval forces.
