All papers wrote in front- or inside-page articles that the Okinawa Police on Thursday re-arrested a former Marine on additional charges of murder and rape resulting in death, noting that the local prosecutors’ office on the same day formally indicted the suspect on the charge of abandoning the body of a local woman. On the additional charges, the base worker has reportedly told the police that he has nothing to say at this point. According to Asahi, USFJ released a comment saying: “Our prayers and condolences are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones.” Sankei and Nikkei wrote that the victims’ parents are exhausted by grief.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga commented on the re-arrest by telling the press: “This is a truly terrible and cruel crime that has caused considerable concern among the local community.” Okinawa Governor Onaga released a statement in which he said: “The anger of the Okinawan people is boiling over…. We continue to urge the both governments to conduct a review of SOFA and reduce the excessive base burden.”
