China tries to divert international attention from South China Sea?

A former MSDF fleet commander told NHK’s “News Watch 9” aired on Thursday evening that the passage of a Chinese frigate through the contiguous zone outside Japan’s territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands on Thursday was probably intended to draw international attention to the East China Sea when the nation is becoming increasing isolated due to its activities in the South China Sea. The former MSDF officer speculated that China may take a similar action again before the Permanent Court of Arbitration makes a ruling on the territorial dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea. He welcomed the GOJ’s swift move to lodge a protest against China by summoning its ambassador to MOFA at 2 a.m. to send a clear message to Beijing.
