Asahi wrote from Seoul that it has learned from several sources connected to China-ROK relations that China has informally conveyed a request to the ROK government that the trilateral summit and foreign ministerial meeting scheduled to be held in Japan be convened after the G20 summit to be held in China in September. The foreign ministerial and the summit will likely be delayed until October and November, respectively. According to the sources, China told South Korea ahead of Foreign Minister Kishida’s visit to Beijing in April that it will not discuss arrangements for the trilateral meetings before the G20 summit in September, citing MSDF vessels’ calls at ports in the Philippines and Vietnam and Japan’s strengthened security cooperation with Australia and India as reasons. China also insisted that Prime Minister Abe should visit China to attend the G20 ahead of the trilateral summit in Japan.
