All dailies wrote that Tokyo is extremely alarmed by the latest incident since it came only six days after Japan lodged a protest against a Chinese frigate’s passage through contiguous waters in the vicinity of the Senkakus. Mainichi quoted an unnamed senior MOD official as saying: “China is likely to establish one fait accompli after another.” According to Asahi, GOJ officials are frustrated because Japan has no effective tools to force China to comply with international rules at sea. Yomiuri wrote, however, that as the Abe administration does not want to aggravate bilateral tension over these incidents, it plans to urge Beijing to exercise restraint when PM Abe visits China for the G20 summit in September and holds a summit with President Xi.
