Senior Russian official meets with Abe

All papers wrote that Russia’s State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin held talks with Prime Minister Abe at the Kantei yesterday, quoting the visitor as telling the press afterward that they discussed the prime minister’s attendance at an economic forum in Vladivostok in September and other issues of mutual interest. Asahi said although President Putin’s senior aide is subject to Western sanctions over the situation in Ukraine, Abe chose to accept his courtesy call with the goal of achieving progress on the Northern Territories dispute.

According to MOFA, Naryshkin presented the premier with a DVD of video footage of Hiroshima and Nagasaki taken by the Soviet Army right after the atomic bombings in August 1945. Asahi speculated that by calling attention to the U.S.’s responsibility for the atomic bombing, Moscow attempted to drive a wedge between the U.S. and Japan since their bonds were strengthened following President Obama’s trip to nuclear ground zero.
