U.S. remains mum on escalated Chinese naval operations off Okinawa

Sankei wrote from Washington that the U.S. has apparently exercised restraint in responding to escalated provocations by the PLA Navy around Okinawa, speculating that Washington is being put in an awkward position since criticism of the Chinese operations would probably backfire by undermining its justification for “freedom of navigation” operations in the South China Sea. The daily warned that if the Obama administration chooses to remain “silent,” Beijing may further escalate its provocations in the South and East China Seas.
