On June 16 at a joint meeting of its National Defense Division and other divisions, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) drew up a resolution calling for the government to take measures to respond to the passage of a Chinese warship through the contiguous waters off the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture. The resolution urges the government to lodge a strong protest again with the Chinese government and points out that Japan should purchase the necessary equipment to strengthen the response by the Self-Defense Forces. The LDP hopes to fund the measures using a supplementary budget for fiscal 2016 to be submitted during an extraordinary Diet session this fall.
