Mainichi wrote that during a meeting on June 21 with Defense Minister Nakatani, Okinawa Governor Onaga called for SOFA revision and major consolidation and reduction of the U.S. forces in Okinawa, including the Marines. Nakatani explained that the GOJ plans to accelerate consultations with the U.S. on the possibility of reviewing the SOFA status of base contractors. Onaga also held a meeting with Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sugita and visited MOFA and the U.S. Embassy. The governor told reporters at the Kantei that it is necessary to determine the underlying causes of the recent incident involving a U.S. base worker and expressed his intention to visit the U.S. to directly call on USG officials to reduce the base-hosting burden on Okinawa.
