Asahi wrote that Okinawa Governor Onaga commented on a statement posted on the USFJ’s Facebook page saying that it is a misunderstanding that 75% of the U.S. bases in Japan are concentrated in Okinawa and Okinawa actually hosts 39% of the U.S. military facilities. Onaga told reporters on June 28: “I am dumbfounded by the statement. The U.S. and Japanese governments have been discussing the burden in terms of land area, and no objection has been raised. Discussions on the burden are distorted like this.”

Tokyo Shimbun front-paged a report on the USFJ statement, quoting Defense Minister Nakatani as saying that it is a matter of how the data is analyzed and he does not comment on every item of data because there are many ways to analyze it. The paper separately reported on press remarks by Governor Onaga, quoting him as saying that it is very regrettable that the U.S. military, which claims to support the U.S.-Japan alliance as a “good neighbor,” is distorting the discussion.
