Regarding the recent USFJ Facebook post saying it is a misunderstanding that 75% of the U.S. bases in Japan are concentrated in Okinawa and Okinawa actually hosts 39% of the U.S. military facilities, the vice-director of public affairs at USFJ headquarters told Okinawa Times on June 28 that confusion arises when land area and facilities are mixed up. He explained that the intent of the post was to provide additional information for discussions on USFJ. The vice-director said that there was “no particular reason” for posting the message on Okinawa Memorial Day. In an editorial, Okinawa Times commented, “Saying 39% is an evasive way of downplaying the burden of the bases on Okinawa and covers up the fact that the bases are concentrated in our prefecture.”
