In connection with Okinawa Prefecture’s refusal to file a lawsuit, which was agreed between the central and Okinawa governments, over the construction of a new base following the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma (Ginowan City in Okinawa Prefecture), Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said at a press conference on June 28: “We have no intention to resume the construction work before the court makes a judgment.”

Although it has bas been decided that the central and prefectural governments will push forward with legal procedures following the agreement after dropping their suits, the Central and Local Government Dispute Management Council, a third party organ, avoided making a ruling on the propriety of the central government’s call for rescinding Gov. Takeshi Onaga’s cancellation of land reclamation approval.
