Monday’s Tokyo Shimbun took up an allegation by freelance journalist Jon Mitchell based on U.S. military data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act that 415 environmental accidents and incidents, including the leakage of extinguishing agents and light oil, occurred at Kadena AB between 1998 and 2015 and that many of the cases were not reported to Japanese authorities. The journalist claimed that the SOFA stands in the way of Japanese investigations into the environmental destruction of U.S. bases.
