Saturday morning’s Asahi took up press remarks in Tokyo on Friday by Assistant Secretary of State Frank Rose, who explained the U.S.’s negative position on the proposed Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) by saying: “Nuclear weapons reduction cannot be separated from security…. Russia is very aggressive and North Korea possesses nuclear weapons irresponsibly. North Korea will not give up its nuclear weapons even if the Nuclear Weapons Convention is created.” The U.S. official expressed “concern” about some UN member states’ moves in an upcoming UN nuclear reduction meeting in Switzerland in August to issue a recommendation for the UN General Assembly to start formal discussions on the NWC.
