Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti warned that foreign fishing boats confiscated for illegal fishing within Indonesia’s territorial waters or exclusive economic zone will be blown up as soon as early July. Susi said she is “angry about illegal fishing” and has thus far ordered 176 boats be blown up. The country’s law stipulates boats engaged in illegal fishing can be destroyed, but past ministers, out of consideration for relationships with other countries, seldom took this step.

With the encroachment of Chinese fishing boats into Indonesia’s EEZ attracting global attention, Susi emphasized in a recent press conference: “No boat is allowed to catch fish or even take water or sand within our EEZ without permission, regardless of which country it belongs to. That is a theft.” She warned that fishing boats will be apprehended or confiscated if they conduct illegal fishing regardless of their nationalities. (Abridged)
