All Sunday papers reported on the announcement on July 9 by the South Korean military that North Korea fired what appeared to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) off its east coast on Saturday. The projectile appears to have been successfully ejected above the surface of the water but failed to fly normally in the air. Asahi wrote that although the SLBM test failed this time, threats to the U.S., Japan, and South Korea will increase if Pyongyang advances its missile development. The papers speculated that the missile test was intended to express Pyongyang’s strong displeasure at the recent U.S.-ROK decision to deploy the THAAD system to South Korea. Prime Minister Abe commented on the issue on Saturday, saying that North Korea’s latest action is a clear challenge to the UN Security Council resolutions.
