All papers reported that the official campaign period for the Tokyo gubernatorial election will start today, noting that it will be a three-candidate race among LDP legislator Yuriko Koike, former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Hiroya Masuda, and veteran journalist Shuntaro Torigoe. As Kenji Utsunomiya, former Chairman of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, who collected about 900,000 votes each in his failed bids in the two previous gubernatorial elections, dropped out of the race and threw his support behind the opposition-backed Torigoe yesterday, the LDP administration is reportedly concerned that its candidate Masuda may be forced to wage a tough campaign since some party supporters will be tempted to endorse Koike, who chose to run in defiance of the ruling party’s decision to embrace Masuda’s candidacy.
