All papers reported extensively on the Emperor’s purported wish to abdicate the throne in a few years on account of growing difficulties in fulfilling his official duties due to his advanced age, noting that since the current Imperial Household Law does not allow abdication, it and other relevant statutes will have to be amended. The Emperor has reportedly suggested to his confidants his desire to give up the post, and Empress Michiko and Crown Prince Naruhito are supportive of the idea. Arrangements are reportedly being made by the Imperial Household Agency for the Emperor to explain his “feelings” to the public. The Kantei has secretly launched a special taskforce to identify and resolve legal and other issues that stand in the way of meeting the Emperor’s wish to surrender the throne. The media emphasized that a national debate will be needed because the Emperor’s abdication would mark a significant change in the modern Imperial system.
