Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Keiichi Ishii will tour Malaysia and Singapore from July 21 to market the technology of the Shinkansen bullet train system. He is scheduled to meet with key government officials of the two countries and attend symposiums on high-speed railways. Plans are underway to build a high-speed rail system connecting Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, to Singapore. Japan will play up the safety of the Shinkansen technology to better compete with China.

China is also keen to win the project that is designed to cover a total distance of 350 km in an hour and half. The details of the project could be announced soon. Ishii will make a top-level sales pitch to promote Japan’s technology. East Japan Railway Company, better known as JR East, and trading house Sumitomo Corp. have taken the initiative to market the Shinkansen technology. The government is working to step up public-private efforts to promote Shinkansen since it lost against China in the bidding over a railway project in Indonesia.
