Asahi wrote that at a meeting with Defense Minister Nakatani on July 25, Okinawa Governor Onaga protested the GOJ’s resumption last week of the construction of helipads at the Northern Training Area by having riot police remove protesters blocking the site. The governor made the protest during Nakatani’s meeting with the governors of 15 prefectures hosting U.S. bases. The governors asked the minister to revise the SOFA. Nakatani reportedly told Onaga in response that the construction of landing zones is necessary because a major portion of the training area will be returned as a result of the construction of the helipads.
